Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Doodling can be taken to great heights. My urban students love Japanese and street art but the basic Crayola markers we use are not good enough to create sophisticated work. Most of our students (90%) are eligible for free or reduced price lunch.

Our community is vibrant and multicultural but we also have high poverty and an alarming amount of crime.

All of our students are people of color who are striving to get ahead. Most of them come from immigrant families and are English language learners. Art can be used to heal trauma. We use cartooning to tell our life stories and we use traditional designs to connect to our ancestors. The 9th graders will be working on basic art concepts using the elements of art as their anchor. The senior institute students will work on more complex assignments and they are required to produce a sophisticated finished piece as their final exam.

My Project

Kids like working with markers. They are accessible and easy to use. I am ordering sharpies so I can do tin designs and other metal work. The class pack of markers will last the whole year and it can also be used for our art club. Because our tiny budget doesn't allow me to cover the basics, these materials will be a great help to our art program.

Students will be able to be proud of their work.

Markers are such a versatile medium that we will be able to use them for everyday uses. We'll be abe to create posters for bake sales, soccer games and art club announcements to more sophisticated work like graphic novels and Manga.
