This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach in a Title 1, 6-8 middle school in the Bronx. The supplies, that the students use during the day, for anything outside of their notebook and pencils, are supplied by the teachers. Markers, colored pencils, scissors, and glue are extremely hard to come by. Often times the kids are unable to complete projects and activities because of a lack of resources.
Supplies are hard to come by. Even though our school was able to give us a few things in the beginning of the year, my students have used the markers until they are dry, the glue until it was completely gone, and sharpened the color pencils until there was nothing left. There is so much that we want to be able to do as a class but we are unable to because we don’t have markers, pencils, glue and scissors to complete the projects.
My students are amazing readers and writers. Their creativity is bursting at the seams. However we have literally come to a halt with the lack of resources to bring our school work to the next level. As a teacher it is extremely discouraging they I have to tell my students we can not do a project or complete an activity because we do not have something as basic as markers to complete it.
This is where we hope you will come in. If we had some markers, scissors, glue and colored pencils, we can become the class that is trapped within ourselves. In a day in age when business executives are getting multi-million dollar bonuses it is extremely disheartening that there is not enough money in education for markers, scissors, glue and pencils.
Help my class become the students that they want to be. You will make it possible for them to truly express their creativity and help them live up to the potential that I know each and every one of them has inside. Help my future leaders of America discover who they are by providing them with the basic supplies that they need to be successful students.
