Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Let's face it, math is not the most glamorous subject. It takes a lot to motivate students. So, during one math small group review lesson, I started writing on a laminate tabletop. The students looked on with wide eyes. After modeling the problem, they asked if they could also use the table. I casually said, "Sure, why not." In my mind, I was praying I would find a way to scrub the marks off.
During the lesson, I had a front-row view of their math thinking, which allowed me to provide instant feedback.
The students clearly loved working on the table. They left filled with confidence and chatter about how much they enjoyed the lesson.
While I scrubbed away their math thinking, I reflected on how writing on the table stimulated my most reluctant, frustrated math students to eagerly share their work.
Adding whiteboard tables to my classroom will greatly improve student motivation by actively involving students in the learning process!
