This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My science students participate in a book club. I believe this is an invaluable experience that leads students to appreciate literature and help them to gather meaning while forming positive relationships with books.

My students are very bright and creative.

They love learning and their willingness to participate in my class ceases to amaze me. My students are very diverse ethnically, linguistically, and socioeconomically. I teach English language learners, special education and gifted students. My students have chosen our school and many travel up to an hour across town every morning and afternoon just to attend our school. They inspire me to provide them with a positive and memorable learning experience everyday.

My Project

My students will participate in a book club using this novel (and another I'm requesting in a separate project proposal). We will read segments of the book in class and they will read on their own too. Every Monday, we will devote the entire class period to discussing passages from the book and learning more about the places and time the book was written.

Although our school is only a few miles from the beach, many of my students have never seen the ocean.

Experiences like reading this novel, will help me give my students a better understanding of life in and around the ocean (including how humans are affected). My ultimate goal, is to get them to love the ocean and care about its protection. I am very aware that, with your help, we can influence the next generation to be stewards.
