This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our school is the only Elementary to have a Mariachi band. The group consists of 30 dedicated students who practice once a week to learn classic Spanish songs. The students are very eager to learn how to play an instrument and learn how to sing.
Our school is a Title I school in which all the students receive free lunch and are also provided breakfast in the classroom to get their day started.
Many of the students live in very small apartments with multiple families living together. School becomes a second home for many of the students; they feel safe and happy to be at school every day, and they really enjoy practicing their music and performing in different venues around the city.
My Project
Every new school year the Mariachi group keeps growing with new students interested in playing an instrument and singing Spanish songs.
We only have one vihuela that has been broken for many years.
This year we have a second grade student who has a passion for learning to play the vihuela. The student has been practicing with the broken instrument. He is happy to learn how to play the instrument and does not mind practicing with a broken instrument.
We would like to offer the vihuela as an instrument that students can learn how to play and use it when we go to different community events to perform.
