Mardi Gras Masks- A Lesson with Papier Mache

My students need 100 of these plastic mask forms so that every person in the grade level can have consistent support for their under-construction masks.

FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Biddix's classroom raised $307

This project is fully funded

My Students

This year, our school is not receiving any money for supplies. My students love doing art projects that are out of the ordinary. Masks are something that the students look forward to doing from the time they are in kindergarten. This is the year for the third graders to do this project. They love it

My students live in a rural.

They come from a very homogeneous community where everyone is very much the same. Cultural education is of vital importance here. Masks are a perfect way to introduce cultural differences. Hopefully, studying the diversity will lead to acceptance of other cultures. I serve two schools with a combined student body of nearly 900 students. These students are interested in everything. They are very curious and open to new ideas. Many of them have not had a great deal of exposure to the arts. Especially art from other places and times.

My Project

As I have stated above, I think students would benefit from the study of the masks of the world. The different cultures that they represent, and the way masks are used in each culture. Masks have been around for thousands of years. Many students only see masks as a disguise for Halloween. In reality, the meaning and utilization of the mask goes very deep into the mind of man. Third graders can at least begin to understand that vast concept. The students can learn the importance of the mask's many uses as it is tied to legend or myth.

The supplies purchased in this project will last many years.

Hundreds of students will benefit from the purchase of these supplies. The mask forms can function as molds for plaster as well. They are sturdy enough to hold masks with many added accouterments.
