My Students
I am an instrumental music teacher. I teach students in grades 5th through 12th grade. Many of my students come from low-income families. All the 5th graders in my school get excited about joining the band. Unfortunately, many of their families cannot afford to purchase an instrument. We have a few school instruments but not enough for all students who want to participate.
My school is located in a very small town in central Kansas.
Music is such an important skill to learn. It improves performance in other subjects. But most importantly it gives the students a chance to be part of a team. Some students don't have the athletic skills to be on the basketball team but can be part of the team in the band. It is so important for their self-esteem.
My younger students enjoy marching in several parades each school year. My 6th through 8th-grade students are not very big people. Our marching snares are from the 1960's era and are very heavy. It taxes the kids' strength to carry those drums for very far. I would like to replace those old heavy snare drums.

My Project
My sixth-grade percussionists are learning to march for an upcoming parade. Our current marching percussion is at least fifty years old. The drums are very sturdy but extremely heavy. After marching several blocks the children are worn out. I am hoping to acquire new marching snares with nice carriers. This equipment will be much lighter and allow my young students to focus on their drumming and not their sore backs and shoulders.
My young drummers love marching but are just not strong enough to carry our old heavy snares.
Marching band is such a fun experience for these children and will create lifelong memories. New and lighter equipment will allow this to happen.
