My Students
The school is a Title I school located in the heart of Staten Island, New York. As one of the most diverse schools in the state of New York, our population is extremely diverse in backgrounds and cultures. We have children who have lived in this country their whole lives, and we have others who have been here just a few weeks. With that said, in this giant melting pot we have a population of children who are amazingly talented and want to perform!
My Project
We are trying to create a marching band where we will be able to showcase our music in the community. By working together we can perform at school events as well as the St. Patrick's Day and Memorial Day parades on Staten Island. A marching band will also help to prepare these students for high school.
By creating a marching band, our students will be able to use the lessons learned in leadership in numerous aspects of their life as they get older.
By learning about setting goals, and being patient enough to achieve them these young adults can help to create a lasting legacy of music in our school and local community on Staten Island.
Generally musicians are seated when performing music, the instrument lyres requested for this project will enable our musicians to perform while being physically active and ultimately "March Into Good Health and the Community!"
This project is important because our school needs an ambassador to the local community and our marching band can serve as just that. As we reach out into our local neighborhood we will be able to bridge the gap between middle school and high school through music; the perfect balance between athletics and art.
