This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My students have always been open and willing to try new musical experiences. This has been the first year that students have had a percussion centered program and are excited to continue on a larger scale and start a marching band. Marching band is known to be a rigorous part of an instrumental music program. Students are not only learning music but learning to march and play as one ensemble while being yards a part. This past school year students have been learning the fundamentals of a drumline which includes music notation, dictation of rhythms as well as ensemble playing. The next step is finally adding instruments to the program the students are eager to use.
These drums will help create the first ever marching band in this school's community.
Though this program had started with only drumpads and sticks, this has limited their ability to grow their music knowledge without the actual instruments. Each child deserves to have a well-rounded music education regardless of their socio-economic background and this is one step in the direction to provide them the music education they deserve.
