Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My second graders will first focus on the UConn men's basketball team. We will start the unit by studying the players and their current ranking. Then we will list the teams that will compete in the March Madness tournament and mark where their schools are located on a map. They’ll create a bracket on our hallway bulletin board and keep track of the basketball scores. While we are following the tournament, the students will then create their own basketball team, team name, mascot, and jersey on paper. Then they will design their own jersey on white t-shirts using fabric markers. They will need to construct their own mini basketball hoop using tape, cardboard, pipe cleaners, plastic cups, popsicle sticks, and construction paper. Students may work with a partner or in a small group. Students will work collaboratively as they share their ideas, materials, and final projects. They will use science, technology, engineering, and math to construct this project. Once all of the projects are completed, we will have our own March Madness basketball tournament in the classroom. Last by not least, I will encourage the students to continue to play basketball at home. Instead of playing basketball online or watching it on TV, play it in real life. All students will go home with their own basketball.
