March Forth to Carry On in Beginning Band!

Help me give my students some wonderful percussion instruments for our newly formed beginning band program (6th and 7th grades) at a school that has never had a band before!

My Project

I am a seasoned music educator, located in rural Idaho. My students are incredibly clever, curious, and hard-working learners, eager for new musical experiences. We are a diverse Title I school with a sizable population of free/reduced-price lunch recipients and families that are considered homeless. Our school is a tight-knit and caring community of young musicians, with limited access to arts education.

This year my Jr/Sr high school counterpart and I have been faced with a brand new, but definitely incredible challenge; starting up a beginning band program from the ground up--While our school offers general music classes, students have never had the opportunity to participate in a band program that can foster the creativity, discipline, and community pride our students need.

This lack of access to a band program at school can deprive students of the many cognitive, emotional, and social benefits that only music education can provide. Additionally, the absence of a band means our students miss out on opportunities to perform, collaborate, and represent their school in broader community and regional events.

This grant will help our new school band program gain some much needed percussion instruments for student use as well as launch a program that not only teaches music but builds character, community, and opportunity. With your support, we can give our students the gift of music and create a lasting legacy in our schools!
