Our civics & government class studies not only our government as it is today, but also looks into how our country's government has developed. One unit of study we teach is "voting", and one of the topics we learn about is historical barriers to voting rights.
The graphic novel "March" is about the organized march from Selma to Montgomery in the 1960's to help protest against barriers to voting rights for African Americans.
Graphic novels are an excellent way to draw students into social studies topics as well as gain student interest. "March" is an excellent graphic novel authored by John Lewis who participated on the front lines of this historic march that we will use again and again!
