Mapping the Way Through World History

My students need a modern world and US map in the classroom. We currently have a world map from the Cold War (East/West Germany, USSR, etc.) and no US map.

My Students

I work in an social and economically diverse urban school. 57% are on free or reduced lunch (this is not including a number of students who probably qualify, but are unable to or do not know how to apply). This number continues to increase over the years. Our school is ethnically diverse, especially for the area, as the majority of our students are African American, Hispanic or 2 or more races. I currently teach 6 classes (an overload): 5 of World History-10 and 1 of Wisconsin Studies 11/12. I have a number of students with various special behavioral, emotional and learning needs that, due to limited SPED staff (as a result of budget cuts). We have limited technology and, since this is history class, do a lot of reading and writing and not all students are able to access all of the information in the same manner.

My Project

I currently have 2 world maps that are from before 1990 in my room. The "newer" one only shows Asia and a bit of Europe, Australia and Africa (Egypt). The other map is on broken rollers, difficult to see (relief map versus a much more useful political map), and is even older than the other one (1970s). I do not even have a US map. I have limited wall space and need something that can be mounted above my blackboard.

I teach 5 sections of World History (10th grade) at a low income school and my students struggle with basic geography.

The world has changed substantially since the fall of the Soviet Union and the Cold War. I don't have a current map to refer to other than on a power point or in a text book. Large maps are a staple for a history classroom. How can we discuss current events or relate the past to the present when we don't have a current map?
