My Students

I teach Biology and Physiology in a suburban neighborhood. My classes are populated by college-bound students who are engaged, community-minded, energetic, and creative. I have taught for twenty-eight years and honestly, still, feel excited to go to school every day because of the energy and enthusiasm they bring. My students are motivated and excited to learn; however, the school and classrooms are in need of updating.

I teach in a windowless, concrete classroom built in 1974.

Our school is bursting at the seams with about fifteen hundred students on a campus designed to house twelve hundred students. Our school is also old and cannot support the technology we currently have, let alone the new technology we want to bring in. While my students are bright and future-focused, their daily surroundings make it difficult to envision a career in the modern world.

My Project

I am requesting swim caps and permanent markers so my students can do a brain mapping activity at home. They put the swim cap on a volunteer's head and draw an outline of brain areas with emphasis on specific functions we will be studying.

Hands-on learning like this helps kids make connections they would never see in a textbook.

Mapping the brain is a great visual activity that helps our studies come to life. Additionally, students will be challenged to follow anatomical directions which reinforces earlier lessons and they have a chance to be creative.
