Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Despite the fact that we are only a few miles from downtown Chicago, our students are still mesmerized at the sight of the tall buildings and structures up close. As a Math teacher in 3rd and 4th grade I want to introduce the students to the amazing architecture behind Chicago's buildings using math

Our students show Lozano pride in everything they do.

They love to dance and run, read new books, explore new math concepts, build structures, play chess and help out their community. Rodolfo Lozano Elementary school is a public school in Chicago's Wicker Park neighborhood. In the past decade, the neighborhood property values have been rising, forcing many of the school's families to move away. Yet I know many parents, some of whom attended Lozano themselves, that drive or take the bus with their children every morning so their children can attend Lozano. Our students population is 85% Hispanic and 18% black and almost all of the students qualify for free or reduced lunch. Parents involvement and families ties are important at our school. Most of my 3rd and 4th graders have a sibling at the school that they look up to or one that they are mentoring. About 90% of my 3rd and 4th graders are involved in after school activities like sports, chess, art and math groups.

My Project

My students will become Chicago architects and our classroom will become a model of Chicago's landscape. Our math lessons during this project will focus on: plotting Chicago landmarks on the coordinate plane; scaling down thousands of feet of building height into inches; finding the area and perimeter of our building facades; and looking at shapes and symmetry in architectural designs. At the same time students will be researching and building Chicago structures, from the Willis Tower to their own school building. The resources we have are: the Internet and some books for research; our brains for the math; and tons of cardboard and poster paper that we will gather and recycle from our homes. In the past, these projects have been limited by the lack of resources around painting materials to decorate

My students love to draw, paint, write and build.

Unfortunately, we don't have art class during our school day, so I try to incorporate art into our math classes as much as I can. But many art resources can be very expensive, which limits the amount students can experiment and get creative. With these materials I can create a strong base of art supplies for my classroom that will support them in their architecture projects, as well as future art endeavors that we embark on as a class.
