Manipulatives Make Fractions Fun

My project needs a class set of foam fraction circles and squares which includes halves, thirds, etc.

This project is fully funded

One third plus one third equals two sixths. I can't tell you how many times I've seen my fourth graders make this math mistake. They understand addition of whole numbers, but try to apply it to fractions. However, once they see examples of one third put next to one third, they add correctly. Currently I use paper photocopies of fraction strips that students cut out and store in an envelope. While this is better than nothing, the tiny fraction parts end up all over the classroom, fold and rip, or refuse to lay flat for accurate calculation. The fractions kits I'm requesting include a class set of both circles and squares. They are color coded by fraction so students will be able to easily identify and compare measurements. The fourth grade math standards require kids to add and subtract like and unlike fractions. They must also identify equivalent fractions and find the simplest form. The fraction kits will allow kids to explore what fractions are and how they relate to one another. Please help fractions come together for our students.
