Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am new to teaching special education. I teach at a Title I school. I have been given a brand new classroom in the middle of the school year with very few supplies. My students have severe and profound intellectual disabilities. They are nonverbal and wheelchair-bound. Some have vision impairments and require feeding tubes as well. These students are sweet as can be and deserve a proper classroom that stimulates their brains. Their smiles brighten up our day, but I'd like to make them smile more often with items that spice up our classroom and their lives.
My Project
The students in my classroom appear to enjoy storytime. However, it's difficult for them to participate since many of them are nonverbal and have very limited motor skills. I often spend time outside of the classroom creating items that our students can not only see but can also manipulate to show comprehension of a story we've read in class.
These items would help the students get a better understanding of the story, show comprehension, and help retell the story.
We need puppets with storytelling kits. These sets include both the books and manipulatives which are nice because the students can grab the items independently or with hand-over-hand assistance in order to participate.
