This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach first-grade math, science, and social studies, at a Headstart through 5th-grade school in North Miami Beach. Most of my students are high-poverty and have limited resources at home. My students are always excited to use manipulatives such as blocks and counters in class, and when we do center activities, they rush to the center tables or center carpet.
After Hurricane Irma, the financial situation for most of our students became even worse than before.
Most students are still facing the challenges of coming to school with basic supplies.
As we are embarking to be designated officially a STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) school, building and engineering using math concepts, has now infiltrated every aspect of how my math classes are taught.
My Project
Even with limited resources, using the few manipulatives available in my classroom has proved to be quite a success as the students learn quickly, discover and enjoy every lesson while developing mathematical, scientific exploration, spacial, analytical and critical math skills.
I am requesting a "manipulatives for math" class set, which will be used for STEAM activities.
This math set has enough pieces to accommodate groups at a time.
My students now need to experience actually building on a "one on one" basis, to enhance their spacial, motor, building and engineering skills. Currently, my classroom is very limited in terms of hands-on materials for math as well as science.
