My Students

My classroom is a place of exploration and discovery of the world around us! These first graders all come with their own personalities and backgrounds and one of the best ways we can learn is through collaboration and positive communication.

Throughout the year my students will problem-solve in the land of math, explore our amazing world through science, write about our opinions and the facts we have learned, and read every minute that we can! My students constantly strive to absorb as much information as possible and they learn best in a classroom that provides them with any tools they may need to continue exploring.

My Project

In our world of every growing science and technology, understanding how math works and developing problem solving skills in more important than ever. The best way in which first graders learn about the world around them is to jump right and use the power of touch to explore math.

Empowering students to use a hands-on approach to explore and understand the world around them is crucial.

First graders focus heavily on understanding addition and subtraction, learning how to tell time, as well as expanding their problem-solving skills. They will use the ten frames and counters to visualize addition and subtraction, and the individual clocks will allow them to move the hands of the clock themselves instead of watching the teacher do it. I love using number tiles in small groups, and the trays will provide each student with their own work area to move the tiles around. The double dice and the large timer are used in a small group game in which the students see how many equations they can solve in under a minute. Students will work together as a class, in partners, and in small groups to discover the patterns and logic in mathematics. These math supplies will allow students to discover which method of problem-solving makes the most sense to them.
