Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are very interested in reading novels. "Maniac Magee" is a novel that my students read. It supports their language arts curriculum. This novel gives the students an understanding of the differences of people.
My students come from diverse backgrounds.
The greater portion of our school is Latino and White. Some of the minority groups would be Asian, African American, and Native American. Due to the cultural make up, some students do not recognize these differences and the fact that some prejudices may exist.
My Project
The students in my classroom will use the novel, "Maniac Magee," as part of the Language Arts curriculum. The students will have discussions about the main character, Jeffrey Magee, and his experiences being an orphan. They will look at the problems the main character has and how he solves them. The students will then relate this problem and solution theme to their lives. They will write a personal essay based on this theme.
It is important for young boys and girls to read novels.
It is important for them to have discussions about what they read. This helps them with their comprehension. When the students are able to read something that they are interested in, their minds are more alert. They are excited to read. Many children don't find reading enjoyable, but when they read something that holds their attention and entertains them, they are more apt to want to read more and more.
