Manga Motivates: Students Talk, Read, and Connect!

Help me give my students more manga in the library; they are asking for it.

My Project

Our manga section is in the farthest corner of the library; it's our smallest section. But students come in - alone or in groups - looking for it. As they browse titles, they start talking to each other in excited whispers - about a story, a character, or the art. In fact, they'll talk to anyone who will listen. So, It's time to add more manga to our shelves and meet the requests of our students.

Manga motivates students to read, talk about what they are reading, and connect with each other!

The Japanese-style, book-length comic books attract teens because of the vivid drawings, the interesting themes, and because many may have seen the amine (the animated film) version of the story. Now they want to read the story in print.

Manga is popular with readers of all levels, so it serves as an appetizer for students who aren't ready to read a Shakespeare play. I have selected some manga classics like Macbeth and Jane Eyre as well as sci-fi, fantasy, and ''slice of life'' (melodrama).

Loners find friends in the library as they discover that someone else loves the same title. Friend groups explore the stories their tribe recommends. Even I am reading manga now -"The Life-changing Manga of Tidying Up" by Marie Kondo, thanks to a student who shared what she loved about it with me.
