Our library is a warm and vibrant hub in Harlem, New York. Murals outside the school celebrate the accomplishments of renowned authors, such as Zora Neale Hurston, Claude McKay, Langston Hughes, and the school's namesake orator and leader, a fierce advocate for literacy. At our school, we want the library to be a haven, an inspiration, and a launchpad for academic excellence. Unfortunately, many of our children have been hard hit by the pandemic and have lacked opportunities to strengthen their endurance and focus to read long texts. Manga to the rescue! When you open a book of manga, the vocabulary is quite advanced and the adventurous, action-packed pages hold students' interest. I love seeing my students fall in love with books!
When my students pick up manga, their eyes light up and their hunger for comics is insatiable.
Please help us turn around our low test scores and give students the skills they need to succeed. As students build confidence and discover the joy of reading through manga, they can move on to more and more varied texts and see themselves as readers and scholars!
Our first project supported the entire box set of Naruto. This project supports volumes 1, 2 and 3. We've found that the best way to get students hooked on manga is to offer them access to the first three volumes. Students don't want to start reading in the middle of the series, so we need to invest in the opening volumes to get them hooked.
