My Students
Did you have a favorite game as a child that you remember going out of your way to play? For a large number of my students, that game is Mancala. The beauty of this game is not only that it is a strategy game, exercising the mind, but it is also not on a computer or television screen.
My students are 7th and 8th graders in an urban Pennsylvania school district.
They are interested in math games, and really enjoy playing Mancala. It is quite common to have students asking to go all over the school to collect whatever games they can to be able to hold impromptu Mancala tournaments during a missed prep or during lunch.
My Project
I am requesting funding for ten Mancala boards, brain teasers, Math 24 cards, and an algebra game, allowing my students to have tournaments without having to go all over the school to find boards. Mancala is a strategy game that has the ability to improve a student's ability to plan ahead. The Math 24 cards will allow my students to improve their skills working with integers. Additionally, what middle schooler doesn't like a little friendly competition?
Your donations to this project will offer my students a way to have fun and learn basic planning skills at the same time.
In today's technologically-driven world, any time a card or board game can compete with social media and video games, the opportunity must be taken advantage of. Thank you.
