Managing Money With A Career In Computer Science

My students need this Lego EV3 Mindstorm kit to learn about jobs in computer science and programming, and also about personal finances. The wire rack will be valuable storage for the robot.

My Students

My target students are in the 7th and 8th grades at a Title I school in the Delta with a very high population of students who qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. They are incredibly bright and eager to learn. They love working on inquiry-driven projects that require them to work together and apply 21st-century skills. This project will allow students from varied economic backgrounds to work collaboratively with the teacher to prepare them for the workforce they will enter.

My Project

So many students today think that money just grows on trees. When they want something, it is provided for them. I believe one of the jobs of education is to help students understand the value of money and personal finances. In my classroom, we often accomplish this through discussion and real-life job simulations. Some of the best paying jobs of today and tomorrow will be in the field of computer science.

I hope to help students discover the value of money management though jobs in computer science and coding.

We will use the Lego Mindstorm Ev3 kit to build and code robots. Then once the students are hooked on computer science, we will begin to look at possible careers in the field. We will research what it takes to get a job in in computer science or programming, and even how much earning potential is there.

Then the discussion will transition to money management. We will use both classroom discussion and several online resources to learn the economic value of effective money management. My goal is for my students to leave my room with not only some career options but also a good handle on how to be financially stable.
