Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

How would you feel if your favorite books to hear read aloud at school couldn't be shared with your family, because your family members don't read English? This is the case for many of my first grade students. I teach in an urban community in northern Illinois. Nearly 100% of my students receive free or reduced lunch, and over half are English Language Learners. Very few of my students have even a single book at home to share with their loved ones. Despite a lack of literature at home, these students are eager learners and avid readers, excited to read a new book or to revisit a favorite story to talk about what the author is trying to teach us or how he wants to make us feel.

Research shows that students improve their own reading skills by being read to. Further, children who are read to in their native language, even if this is not the language they are learning in school, benefit because parents and other family members can more comfortably discuss characters, plot, and themes with their children. Over the course of the school year, we read hundreds of books that quickly become favorites. "Chrysanthemum," "A Chair for My Mother," and "Strega Nona," among others, are some of the stories we share to read aloud. Immediately, these books are in the hands of students, the topics of conversation at lunch, and the subject of crayon drawings during centers. My students would love to share the beloved stories we read in school with their families, but there is a problem. Many of my students have parents or grandparents who are eager to read aloud with them and share these stories, but are unable to use our classroom copies because the adults read in Spanish only. I do not have access to Spanish translations of our favorite read alouds, which means that many of my students' parents cannot read the copies we have.

How can I get quality literature in the hands of my students in a language they and their families can understand? By creating a section of the classroom library dedicated to books in Spanish! To make this project successful, I need a selection of favorite first grade texts in Spanish. Students may then check out these books and take them home to read, discuss, and enjoy with a parent, grandparent, or sibling.

Your support of this project will change the lives of my students and their families. You will make it possible for my students to enjoy their favorite stories at home and share their love of reading with their families.
