One thing my kids love doing is playing instruments! Half of what I do is teach them specific pieces to play. The other half of my job is to provide them with the tools they need to take my instruction one step further into their own creation.
When I bring out the xylophones for the first time each year, my kids' faces absolutely light up!
I teach in a high poverty school with a very transient population. We care a great deal about them here at school and we all do whatever is necessary to ensure they succeed and feel confident. Every child wants to learn. Sometimes it's just a matter of finding that strength and building upon that.
My Project
We are very blessed to have many xylophones in our classroom. These have been passed down from our previous building and are constantly used in every grade level. Unfortunately, mallets do not last as long as instruments and our mallets have absolutely fallen apart. Without mallets, we are not able to take full advantage of the wonderful pitched instruments we have. While these instruments are used in every grade level, I also offer an after school instrument ensemble that uses them as well.
These instruments teach my kids many musical concepts as well as teamwork, playing in an ensemble, and hand-eye coordination.
They are truly invaluable to us. Please help me continue to provide this fabulous experience for my kids.
