This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Students in grades 2-5 will have a chance to experience a STEM camping adventure like no other while at school! Being in an inner city school, our students haven't had the experience to go camping with their families. When we read about it in class, they always ask about what camping is - so we thought we'd bring the camping adventure to them! Each day a different camping building challenge is presented. Students will use all of the materials we chose for our project to design and build with each day. They develop their prototype and then code the action associated with it. On Monday, they will use recycled materials along with construction paper and tissue paper to design a fire to roast their marshmellows over.
Once they figure out the height of their fire, the real challenge begins - designing a tool to help toast marshmallows over the roaring fire.
They will then build a marshmallow roaster to spin, toasting their marshmellow. On Tuesday, students design a map to get to camp! To do this, they will use a compass and directions, drawing out their map and then code their robot to follow the path taken. On Wednesday, we learn about tents, how to put up a real one and what tents need to stay standing even during bad weather which they will test out! On Thursday, they'll sit around the campfire telling spooky stories they've written while in their tent! The best part of their stories is the sound effects they will code to make the story truly come alive. On Friday it's all about the camp games and challenges they need to particpate in. This project helps them learn perservance and to never give up, when things get tough. It's also great team building!
