Making Virtual Reality a Classroom Reality

Help me give my students Merge VR Headsets, a Smithsonian Optics Room Planetarium, and View-Master sets to expand their learning and inspire their imaginations.

My Students

My 5th grade students are very diverse. We come from a variety of social, economic, religious, and racial backgrounds. We speak several different languages, and we perform on a variety of different academic ability levels. We all come to school each day with different gifts and talents, interests and issues, hopes and dreams.

Despite all the ways we are different, we are alike in so many more ways.

We are all leaders in our school. We are all excited about learning. We LOVE to share what we know. We are curious, ask questions, and celebrate when we are successful at learning new things. Most importantly, we work hard by using everyone's unique talents to support all of our varying needs in order to succeed. We know our teamwork is what will make our dreams work!

My Project

Once upon a time, most of the learning in classrooms came from reading textbooks and answering questions on worksheets. Technology in the classroom (Smartboards, laptops, etc.) has allowed us to do so much more and connect to the greater world beyond our books. We can view videos from under the sea; we can communicate in real time with scientist, authors, and other students half way around the world; and we can even code our own mini-robots.

I would love for my students to be able to add another dimension to their study of science - a 4th dimension, to be exact.

I would like for my students to be able to use virtual reality/augmented reality tools, like the Virtual Reality View-Masters Viewers and a VR Headset on our list, to take their exploration of our science curriculum to the next level. The 4D flashcards and the experience packs are sure to increase student engagement and excitement about our Virginia Standards of Learning objectives regarding animals, oceans, and space lessons. With the virtual reality headsets, I hope for students to be able to virtually explore diverse places like oceans and the Arctic, inside volcanoes and cells, and even places out of this world.
