My Students

The students at my school are an energetic and hardworking group of children. They enjoy coming to school, but school funding cuts over the years have impacted what schools can provide to individual classrooms.

I teach students with special needs in an urban neighborhood where all the students at school are eligible for free breakfast and free lunch.

Our school has hard-working students, as well as teachers and staff, who strive to make our school a welcoming and inviting place. In addition, our school is one of the top-performing schools in the city.

My Project

My school district will be implementing a virtual model of instruction when school reopens. For some students and families, online instruction can be difficult and cumbersome. For example, some parents are essential workers so children are with grandparents and great-grandparents during school hours. Other children I work with are very young and need constant adult supervision to log on to the software platforms that are being used. This is challenging for many parents who also have to work from home during this time.

Stamps and envelopes are being requested so that students can receive assignments through the mail.

I work with students who have special needs and instruction (whether it's face to face or online) needs to be engaging. Having work sent directly to students' homes will help some of my younger learners and their families. I will be able to give them developmentally appropriate assignments that will address motor skills such as using scissors that can’t be completed online. I also want to be mindful of screen time guidelines, but still keep my students participating in educational activities. This project will also assist families and caretakers that need more hands-on experiences.
