Making Virtual Instruction Accessible Part III

Help me give my students stamps and envelopes so they can receive work mailed directly to their homes.

My Students

The students at my school are an energetic and hardworking group of children. They enjoy coming to school, but school funding cuts over the years have impacted what schools can provide to individual classrooms.

I teach students with special needs in an urban neighborhood where all the students at school are eligible for free breakfast and free lunch.

Our school has hard working students, as well as teachers and staff, who strive to make our school a welcoming and inviting place. In addition, our school is one of the top performing schools in the city.

My Project

My school district initially planned on a hybrid model when the school year began in September 2020. However, the COVID19 pandemic rates in our country forced our district to implement a virtual model and we continue to remain in a virtual setting.

For some students and families, online instruction can be difficult and cumbersome.

Some parents are essential workers so children are with other family members during school hours. Other children I work with are very young and need constant adult supervision to log on to the software platforms that are being used. Other students are at education centers while their parents are at work. Virtual instruction has been challenging for all families, especially now that we are still fully online.

Stamps are being requested so that students can receive assignments through the mail.

I was fortunate to have previous projects for stamps funded and been sending work home to many students, particularly younger students. They need a break from screen time as well as activities that use fine motor skills (holding a crayon, using scissors, etc.) that can't be done online. I now need more stamps to continue sending work home. The students that currently receive packages love getting mail addressed to them, even if it is school work.

I am also requesting envelopes and colorful markers to decorate the envelopes. I work with students who have special needs and instruction (whether it's face to face or online) needs to be engaging. Having work sent directly to students' homes is helping my younger learners and their families. I can give developmentally appropriate assignments. I also want to be mindful of screen time guidelines, but still keep my students participating in educational activities. This project will also assist families and caretakers who need more hands-on experiences.
