Making Time for Books that Rhyme!

My students need books by Shel Silverstein, Jack Prelutsky, and other poetry authors as we study the genre of poetry.

My Students

James Patterson once said, "There is no such thing as a kid who hates reading. There are kids who love reading and kids who are reading the wrong books."

My students have diverse backgrounds.

They are eager to please and often want to expand upon what they are being taught. They do this by asking questions, conducting research, working in small groups, and creating projects to go along with the lessons they have been taught.

My Project

This year, my students have continued learning about different genres and types of books as we explore different options during our independent reading time. My students have a new found interest in poetry, and unfortunately our classroom library is scarce when it comes to poetry filled books. We will use these books to further explore poetry and understand the purpose and composition of poems. In the past, my students have loved checking out books by Jack Prelutsky and Shel Silverstein in our school library; however, since these books are shared among the entire school, they are not always available for checkout. Having these books in our classroom library will make them more easily available to students as they learn to love a new genre of reading.

It is important that my students have a wide understanding of different genres.

The quote above is what drives my instruction when teaching genres and introducing my students to a variety of books. Showing students that there are MANY different types of reading opens their eyes to ideas and possibilities they might not otherwise explore on their own. Having access to these books will give my students the resources they need to further explore, perhaps their new favorite type of reading material.
