Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a third grade teacher, at a school in the South Bronx. I teach both reading and writing. I was fortunate enough that a proposal that I submitted for this past academic year was fulfilled. I had the opportunity to use transparency sheets as a motivational tool in my writer's workshop, and it was a success. Those sheets I will definitely use over to showcase student work and anchor papers. I would like to be given the opportunity to use this tool during extended day and Reading Academy. During this time teachers have to prepare students, for high stakes reading and math test. I believe that copying the stories on the transparencies, will allow me to model my thinking process, when teaching the students reading strategies. Modeling strategies, like retelling, is one way to use the transparencies. Using dry erase marks, I can show students how to locate answers in a text. I can also highlight key words. Using this visual tool will allow students that are visual learners to see the actual process. In past experiences the use of the overhead projector has been a way to capture the students attention. The learning experience is enhanced, in comparison to using chart paper or the dry erase board. Again this would be material that I would be able to use again. Because the same material would be used the following year. Think about the students, they would much rather see the visual model, and read along, than listen to me read aloud and talk to them.
