Making the U.S. Constitution Come to Life through Literature

My Students
Do you remember saying the Pledge of Allegiance in primary school? Did you know what it meant? What about when your teachers talked about the Constitution, or Benjamin Franklin? My students are eager to read and I want them to connect with history through the literature we read.
In order for my first and second grade primary school students to understand important historical events and documents, they must first relate to them.
This can be done in small guided reading groups, where we focus on reading for information and details of United States history. We celebrate Constitution Day at my school, and I want to prepare my students for this celebration by helping them gain knowledge about the importance of the United States Constitution and what it means to our country.
My Project
My students will read books about important historical documents, individuals, and landmarks in small guided reading groups and also independently from our class library. Discussion and interaction are important parts of making meaning in the primary classroom. We will also create our own classroom constitution and reenact important historical events we learn about in the literature.
Your donations will enable my students to understand important historical events that often seem abstract and far away to young students.
Quality children's literature allows historical events to come to life for my students. I want them to understand why we say the Pledge of Allegiance and why we celebrate Constitution Day.
