My Students
Do you ever look at home videos of past events? My students are not just making home videos, but creating comprehensive short films and music videos to present to others, submit to competitions, and preserve for future viewing.
My school is considered a rural school outside a major city in the United States, but really, it is a great environment in which parents raise their kids.
After seven years of working in my current school, the only way to describe the students is diverse. Creative geniuses, young intellectuals, students finding their way in life, and some just trying to get to the ultimate goal of getting a diploma all pass through my class. The diversity alone makes working with them as rewarding as anything in education.
My Project
In my film studies and film studies II class, students are required to produce both a music video as well as a short film. The materials being requested include a Canon HF G30 camera, Sennheiser video microphone, LED light, and a camera tripod. This film equipment would enable students to use premier materials to help produce fantastic film projects. Currently, most students just use their smart phones to film projects and that works well to a certain extent, but these materials will enhance the experience greatly. After discovering the content in class and using the materials being requested, it will only cultivate their knowledge. I have seen this transformation before from smart phone to amateur camera and it is astounding. Students walking out of the class will learn many aspects of film, but more importantly, the idea of embarking on a project and doing it to his or her own fullest potential using equipment that will help produce films that will make themselves proud.
The next Steven Spielberg may walk through my room at any time.
Having these resources available in my classroom will only increase the film program. Exposure to film using the materials requested will help students master the content and build self confidence for the future.
