This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach Kindergarten in a low income, high crime neighbor. Many students are at school for the extended hours of 7am-6pm. We are a Charter School with a mission to successfully reach students whose needs may previously not have been met at other public schools and to send every student to college.
In my class this year I have students who have parents in jail, experienced shootings in their home, and been victims of physical abuse and neglect. Despite these obstacles these children amaze me with their spirit and potential. I truly believe there is no limit to what they are capable of.
Recess is an important part of the day to help develop gross motor skills, release energy, and to practice engaging in group games where you are forced to deal with sharing, taking turns, and how to appropriately handle both winning and losing. Our community’s high obesity rate makes being active especially important. We currently have no recess equipment. Occasionally a student will bring a ball from home and it is no surprise that attempting to share one ball among a 20 person class can be frustrating and leave several 5-year-olds in tears.
I have requested a recess set that includes 3 kickballs, 7 jump ropes, 2 Skip-N-Hops, 2 basketballs, 2 footballs, 1 soccerball, 2 foam discs, and 1 duffle bag to store it all in that will allow us to bring it to and from class.
Your support will help my students make the most out of recess!
