Making the Most of Microscopes

My Project

Before my high school students come to my class, they may be thinking about their family, how they are going to pass my class or their next class, when it is time to eat, or how they are going to get all their work done and still sleep. Then they enter my classroom and try their best to look at concepts of the natural world and apply it to their reality. It is hard to be a student, but my students work hard and they make their goals happen. I am proud of them and I am making this project because they deserve to see how beautiful our world is and how they are a part of that beauty.

These microscopes are going to help engage students learning the cellular aspects of biology, and assist in making observations involving Earth Science concepts.

My goals for this project are three-fold. To start, students will be instructed then guided in the proper care and use of the microscopes. Students will have a working knowledge of the microscopes and how to care and troubleshoot issues independently when this goal has been met. Then, students will create a gallery walk of their captured images using the knowledge that they gained. This collaborative project will solidify skills, but also beautify our campus and give students an appreciation of the natural world. My final goal for the microscopes in this proposal is that these tools become a regular part of my instruction for the rest of the year. To accomplish this, students will learn to make their own slides, view specimens with the microscope instead of a hand lense, and the microscopes will be stored safely, but easily accessible.

With only 10 microscopes, over 100 students will get to experience the world in a new way.
