Making the Math & Reading Connections

My students need 16 math books, like "Kiss My Math" and "Bones and the Math Test Mystery." My students love to read, and they need some math books to read and find that same love for math.

My Students

Have you ever heard a kid say, "I just don't get math" and then their parents say "math today is just not the same as it was when I was in school".

I teach 7th and 8th grade students.

It is a high poverty district. They are great kids who love to learn. Math is the one subject their parents don't seem to understand. I am constantly having parents tell me they cannot help their kids. This brings on a negative attitude about math as a whole. I want to change that attitude.

My Project

Often I am having to tell my students to put their book down. They are wonderful readers. So I am challenging myself to include more math books in my classroom. I want to have available for them books that will teach them the little math tricks. I want them to have interesting math stories to read. I have a book about the Pythagoreans Theorem that I read every year. The kids get so much out of that book, I want to get that reaction more often.

The 16 books I have picked out will be inspirational for my students.

They will also be available for the parents to relearn some of their old tricks. Math is so important, I want to combine the reading they love with the math I am so passionate about.
