Making STEM Real: Let's Get Digital

My students need nine laptops for the classroom to have engaging lessons where I can maximize the use of my SMART Board.

My Students

I work in a high poverty area in the Bronx, NY. My students are severely underserved and my school has very limited resources. When the students find a task too difficult, they act out. I have noticed that when they 'get it' they pay more attention. I want to teach the kids content plus skills. I have many students that cannot use a computer, work excel or powerpoint, skills they will use in high school and in the job place. I want to make learning real for them. I want to capitalize on STEM in the classroom to give my students skills that will prepare them for life.

I service a self-contained, special education population with various disabilities.

Some of the disabilities are Intellectual Disability, Learning Disability, ADHD, Emotional Disturbance, etc. Research has shown that technology has improved and utilizing technology in the classroom will greatly improve the learning opportunities for the students.

My Project

My goal is to have the students have a comprehensive, end of school year, digital portfolio. I would like to incorporate google classroom into my teaching practice and the students need the computers to be able to access it. I would like the students to get better at typing, and I want them to have their lab reports typed to have better portfolios. Many of the students have bad handwriting but are not receiving the OT they need. I also want them to have access to online tutoring for areas they need to improve.

Research shows that when students are using technology as a tool, or a support for communicating with others, they are in an active role rather than the passive role of recipient of information transmitted by a teacher, textbook, or broadcast.

The student is actively making choices about how to generate, obtain, manipulate, or display information. Technology use allows many more students to be actively thinking about information, making choices, and executing skills than is typical in teacher-led lessons. Moreover, when technology is used as a tool to support students in performing authentic tasks, the students are in the position of defining their goals, making design decisions, and evaluating their progress.
