My Students
Hi, my name is Mr. Lee and I had the fantastic honor of being named the 2016 Georgia Teacher of the Year. I am a social sciences teacher in Savannah, GA. When I received this award, many were surprised that I stayed in the classroom rather than go on to bigger and better things. The biggest and the best thing I feel I can do is to stay in the classroom and prepare my students for a successful entrance into colleges and universities, to enter the workforce, or gain admission into the military services. My heart is and remains in the classroom with my students.
Currently, I teach International Baccalaureate History and Advanced Placement Psychology and while many of my students are gifted nearly all my students come from economically disadvantaged homes.
Most of my students are the first in their family to graduate from high school and to attend college. I take my job very seriously for I have the privilege to help guide students on their journey. The AP participation rate is 31%. The total minority enrollment is 84%, and 62% of students are economically disadvantaged.
My Project
People always come to me saying they loathed history as a student. I understand their feelings, so now I can help my students find the same joy and passion I have for social studies. I keep my classes hopping as we study everything from the Early Colonial Era in the North American Colonies to the intrigue of post-World War II Soviet and American Spies roaming around the world in the Cold War Era. So how do I instill the love of history and social studies? First, I bring my love and passion into the classroom and second, I make it fun in order to engage my students’ curiosity.
I have flexible seating, installed light shades that look like clouds are passing overhead, and a classroom lending library for my students.
Now I want to take to bump it up with a Qball throwable microphone.
Qball is a throwable wireless microphone, wrapped in durable foam and is soft enough for students to toss around during classroom activities. My goal is to increase student participation and engagement as well as to create excitement that leads to greater student engagement. The portable speaker is to broadcast students’ voices when they are holding the Qball. Students will ask questions and respond using the Qball. Most people will agree, if a class environment is fun, it does not feel like work and before long students are not only enjoying class, but they are learning and improving their reasoning and verbal communication skills. Please consider helping to support my students and if you like the idea mention it to your friends and ask them to support us as well. Thank you for reading this to the end and I know my students will be grateful for your support.
