Textbooks are created for "cookie cutter" students and I do not teach "cookie cutter" kids! My students are excited and enthusiastic individuals that need literacy support. The social studies textbook that I am provided is not accessible to all my students.
I have the best students in the city.
They come to school everyday ready to learn no matter what is going on at home. They get excited about whatever topic we are learning about and are constantly asking inquisitive questions about why certain events happen the way they have in our country's history. I work in a "Level 4" K-8 turnaround school where all students receive free breakfast and lunch.
My Project
By working in a "Level 4" turnaround school,I am always looking to deliver content in a "outside of the box" way to ensure I am meeting the needs of all my students. My students have difficulty accessing the social studies text I am provided so I am constantly retyping/rephrasing the text so they can understand it. The "If you Lived..." books that I am requesting would be accessible to all of my students and provide an opportunity for me to differentiate my instruction to meet all of the learners in my classes.
The future depends on the students I am teaching.
If we don't want history to repeat itself I need books that my students can access to learn from our past mistakes. They are bright individuals with endless potential so I know, without a doubt, they will be the future leaders of our country!
