Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I am the school counselor at a diverse, inner-city school. I see students for a variety of issues including divorce, loss, emotion regulation and social skills.

My goal this year is to incorporate more play into my counseling practice.

Play can be intrinsically therapeutic and can provide a window into the thoughts and feelings of a child who is reluctant or unable to express themselves.

Many of my students are English language learners, and I've found that sand, art, games, picture books, and play helps transcend language barriers. Play naturally promotes social skills such as cooperation, taking turns and dealing with frustration.
