Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are amazing! They are bright seventh and eighth graders who love to learn and perform. Everyday my theatre class surprises me with their creativity and imagination.
My amazing students create outstanding theatre with little to no resources.
Our school is located on the South Side of Chicago. The student body is 99% Latino and low income. Many of my students are immigrants or first generation Americans. Most speak English as their second language and Spanish in the home. Being in the Chicago Public School System, there isn't much money available to cover all of the needs of our students, and the arts are often the classes that feel the lack of resources.
My students have the desire to learn and create, now they just need the resources to do so.
My Project
During this unit, I will be collaborating with the student's English teachers to bring Shakespeare comprehension to my kids.Shakespeare has influenced so much of the English language and I want to bring that knowledge to my students.
My students need leveled Shakespearean books in order to learn about the Bard at their own level.
We will be exploring Shakespeare's influence on the English language and the world around us. The books I have selected are at an easier reading level than traditional Shakespeare. This is imperative since many of my students speak English as a second language and Shakespearean language can be difficult for even the most advanced reader.
