Making Sense of the 5 Senses

My Students

My students come from neighborhoods that are high in need but low in resources. I work with champions and little troopers from Pre-Kindergarten to 12th grade that are in the hospital. These students are special and an honor to work with. A lot of my students have sickle cell, but I also have students with asthma, diabetes, cancer, and various other conditions. I also have students that are undergoing organ transplants.

Some of my students miss a lot of schools, due to being frequently admitted to the hospital.

Some of my students are not well enough to attend regular school, so they receive schooling in the hospital and in their home. Being in the hospital can be lonely, boring, frustrating, and scary for kids. They miss time with their family and friends, in which they spend days and nights in the hospital. Fortunately, I am able to teach them while they are in the hospital. Students that feel well enough to come to the classroom receive instruction in the classroom. Those that are under isolation precaution procedures are instructed at their bedside.

My Project

My project will enable my students to learn about the five senses in a fun and meaningful way! The books will provide them with fun facts and engaging stories adorned with delightful illustrations pertaining to the five senses. After reading and discussing the texts, students will engage in fun, hands-on activities that will reinforce the content outlined in the books. The materials in this project will be sure to meet the needs of all students, including English Language Learners and Special Education students in which it is highly centered around visual aides, hearing sounds, and feeling textures.

What better way to teach about the 5 senses than through hands-on fun!

The Touch and Feel Mystery capsules will enable students to develops skills in exploring textures, making comparisons and learning through touch, while the What's the Sound? Mystery Capsules will enable the development of skills in exploring sounds, comparing sounds, and making connections between objects and their sounds.

The Touch and Match Guessing Game goes hand in hand with the Mystery Box which has large hand openings at both ends covered by soft vinyl, so kids can feel, match and compare the objects inside by touch alone. This is a fun game that features 30 objects to feel and explore. My students can try to identify the objects as they touch each one, then match them to the 30 picture cards. As they explore, they increase tactile awareness, vocabulary, memory and communication skills!

The lesson will end with the 5 Senses Instant Learning Center which will be a hand-on activity that will assess whether or not they understood what each of the 5 senses are, which parts of the bodies are used for each sense and if they can identify which sense corresponds to each provided image.
