Help me give my students the financial resources they need. The Chromebook; financial game, and headphones will allow students to access life-long information and skills relating to money.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are middle schoolers at a Title One school in New York. My students come from diverse backgrounds and many from tough homes. They are overcoming social and emotional barriers each day to receive an education. My students are active and enthusiastic. They are motivated and eager to do well. They want to learn and are constantly seeking opportunities to take ownership of their learning.
Our school is in a high needs, high poverty area in which most children are on free or reduced-price breakfast and lunch programs.
My students work hard despite the challenges they face. Many students stay after school, participate in after-school clubs and activities and are always striving to be, and do, better for themselves and for others.
My Project
While students study and learn mathematics while in school, the concept of financial literacy is often underdeveloped. Students are able to add and subtract money, but often do not have the knowledge of saving and spending money effectively.
Financial literacy is a life skill that all children need to develop in order to be successful in their lives.
My students need access to technology that will enable them to become educated consumers, wise savers, and future entrepreneurs. Having access to the Chromebook and headphones will allow students to further research the topic of money, savings, all while setting future financial goals. With the headphones my students can watch and listen to videos that will expand their understanding of money and other financially related topics. Too often, my students are disconnected by what things cost and what it means to save for the future. These resources will go a long way in both educating them and ensuring that they are thinking about their future in a financially smart way.
