Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Hello! I teach the 2nd grade at an urban school in Illinois. We have over 30 students in our classroom! Our classroom includes students who are English Language Learners and students with learning disabilities and specials needs.

Can you imagine teaching 30 students aged 7 and 8?! I will admit it can be a challenge but I truly love it! The key to successful teaching is classroom management, but it requires teaching the students what is expected of them in the classroom and school and rewarding appropriate behavior! Having a strong system of classroom management and students who understand what it means to "behave" in class means that I, as the teacher, can individualize my instruction. I can work with a small group of students while the rest of the class works independently or in small groups on another task! This way, I can meet individually with students who need more help or challenge students who are advanced. In the fall, when school starts, we will write our class guidelines together and all put our signatures on the contract. Every year the students come up with similar guidelines such as "Respect each other," "Raise your hand and wait to be called on," and "Cooperate with group members." When students are young and just beginning to learn how to manage their own behavior they need to be positively reinforced for making appropriate decisions!

I have developed a self-management checklist that my students use to rate their behavior after each subject. Since they are only 2nd graders, they use a smiley face or a sad face. In the morning they write how many smiley faces they want to earn for the day and their reward for meeting that goal. My students in the past have been incredibly motivated to meet their own goals! Often a student will write a goal such as, "I will earn 5 smiley faces for a pencil." My students are incredibly motivated to work towards their goals because they wrote the goals themselves! They are also motivated because they get to choose their own reward, so it is something they really want to earn.

You donation of stickers, pencils, markers, bookmarks and art supplies will help motivate my students to remain on task and show appropriate classroom behavior. That, in turn, allows me to meet with small groups and individualize the education of my students. Even though I have over 30 2nd graders in my classroom, each of them deserves and needs small group and individual instruction. They also deserve positive reinforcement for managing their own behavior! Thank you very much for taking the time to read my proposal!
