My students need hands-on science experiments and activities in order to make their own scientific discoveries.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Please help my first graders have hands-on experiences with science! My students would love to have the chance to be more involved in their own scientific experiments, to really get in there and get their hands dirty figuring things out on their own!
My little first graders are eager and excited to learn.
They are just like little sponges soaking up information from their learning experiences. For many of these students from lower income families, these learning experiences open doors that may not otherwise be available to them.
Our school uses a good math and language arts curriculum but offers little in the way of a science program. Teachers are given little or no funds to supplement these programs and are often left using their own resources to meet the learning needs of their students.
My Project
Currently we are using outdated science book sets and other printables to teach the standards. Try as we might, students get little or no personal experience with science this way. We do what we can to make sure they have some tangible experiences but mainly they simply read about it, color, cut, paste, etc.
With these discovery kits, my students will be able to experiment with motion, sound, magnets and much more and have those tangible experiences with science. They will be able to do the experiments virtually on their own and come to their own conclusions about scientific principles.
Further activities from the learning centers and file folder games will provide appropriate follow-up opportunities that will allow students to demonstrate and practice their knowledge in a hands-on way.
Think of how much more exciting science will be when these students can experiment and discover for themselves!
Science is as important as math and reading in the world we live in, and it is equally important for first graders to have scientific experiences. With your gift, you can make this happen for these students!
