This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Help Save Science!! I remember thinking science was so interesting and fun in school. I loved that part of the day. Today, however, science is not thought of as that important. I beg to differ! I love to teach my students about science and how important it is, but don't have the needed materials.

My students are 7-8 year old second graders at a public elementary school in Arizona.

We are considered a Title 1 school. The parents and students are wonderful and love to learn but sometimes struggle with the necessities. Even though my students struggle in many areas of their life, they love school! They love to learn new things and explore their passions. As a teacher, I hope to foster a sense of excitement and passion for learning in all curriculum areas. However, without the necessary materials (picture books, manipulatives, text books, etc.) it makes it harder to get the students excited about things. I hope to change this.

My Project

The resources I am requesting are interactive games, exciting manipulatives, interactive smartboard software, and scientific tools. If I were to receive these resources I would be better equipped to teach science....AND make it fun and interesting! Children acquire and retain more information when they are having fun and do not even realize that they are learning! This is what the previously mentioned resources will help me do. I will use the resources to spark the student's imagination and curiosity. They can use the resources to access the science curriculum in an exciting manner. The main scientific topics in second grade are the human body systems, properties of materials, life cycles, and the changes in the Earth's sky (the sun, moon, clouds, weather, etc). All of the resources I have chosen would greatly aid in my instruction in these areas. I will be able to create and implement fun, exciting, and interesting activities that will help solidify these ideas in the students minds.

This project is so important because I truly believe that science is an integral part of a child's education.

In the past few years I have witnessed the lack of support in this curriculum area and believe I should do everything I can to help keep science alive and relevant to my students. By making science a part of my students lives, I believe they will take that information and use it in other aspects of their lives. Creating the love for life-long learning is so very important!
