Making Science Interesting

As a teacher of students with disabilities, I am always looking for ways to make science more interesting and meaningful. One way is offer age-appropriate items that spark their interest and encourage curiosity. I believe that I have found two reusable kits that would do just that. The first is a weather forecast board with actual symbols. I would expect my students to access the five day forecast via the Internet and keep the weather board up-to-date. From this, we can discuss appropriate clothing and accessory choices for each day. Students would also be expected to update the board as necessary throughout the week. The second kit would concentrate on health and nutrition. The kit includes a stethoscope, x-rays, food guide posters and simple, healthy recipes. Several of the students rarely receive medical care, so these items will be very helpful at alleviating their fear of medical staff. We would also utilize the food guide posters in teaching proper nutrition - even in the school cafeteria.
