This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am lucky enough to have 26 fifth grade students who are hardworking, motivated and eager to engage in hands-on, project-based learning activities again. Being that we are a part of a low-income STEAM magnet, my students are especially excited about STEAM activities that they otherwise wouldn't have the opportunity to take part in. After having spent a year (or more) on ZOOM, they deserve an extraordinary year overall.

My Project

My STEAM students are always excited to engage in hands-on activities, especially those that center around animals. My students will begin a unit on Owls that will be cross-curricular. With the owl pellets, students will be able to end our unit on a high-note! They will dissect the pellets and match the bones they found to a bone-chart. After identifying what animal(s) the owls had eaten, students will make use their data to make a line-plot (math standard). To close our unit students will write a research paper on owls which will include their findings. Having previously engaged in an animal science activity, I know some of my students will request gloves prior to dissection which is where the glove donation comes in to play.
