My Project
I am lucky to teach at a school that celebrates diversity and the abilities of each of our students. As a math teacher, this means I am encouraged to think with a cross-curricular mindset, so all students have access to an innovative math education, beyond the standards of textbooks and tests.
In past years, my project-based Geometry class has incorporated scale models, quilting, architecture, and even designing a minigolf course!
The materials described in this request would allow my students to design, graph, and create a series of geometric rugs which would help beautify our school. As geometry is the study of shapes, small groups of students will design a rug on paper, then calculate the area of said shape, and use their ratio skills to scale up the design to a rug. They can then actually create the rug using the supplies from this grant!
Using the tufting materials encourages students to feel a physical connection to their work and see their calculation skills in their community. This project accounts for several modes of learning and puts inclusivity at the forefront as students who traditionally struggle with in class lecture can thrive with a hands-on activity.
This project also allows us to examine the cultural history of rug making across the world, especially highlighting the textile history of Native Oklahomans.
COVID-19 forced students to stay online and at home. This was debilitating to their social skills, as well as creatively and academics. This project combines high level academic thinking, interactive teamwork, and a creative final product that celebrates the opportunities that exist when we are all at school together. As student continue to recover their school skills after COVID, this project will serve as a step toward academic and social success.
